The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 12ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ ΙΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The youngest brother rejects both pity and royal favor, denounces Antiochus with prophetic sharpness, and dies in prayer, bringing the brothers' witness to its fiercest climax.

Translation & textual notes

The brothers' witness reaches its climax here in the youngest martyr. Antiochus shifts briefly from menace to persuasion, even recruiting the mother, but the boy transforms both pity and promise into one of the sharpest denunciations of tyranny in the book before dying in prayer for the nation.
