The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 11ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ ΙΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The fifth and sixth brothers continue the martyr contest, exposing Antiochus as already judged by God while proving that disciplined reason remains stronger than contrived pain.

Translation & textual notes

The witness of the fifth and sixth brothers is presented here. Their speeches sharpen the book's argument that reasoned piety cannot be conquered by engineered pain, and they increasingly portray Antiochus as the one whose power is already collapsing under divine judgment.
