The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 15ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ ΙΕ′

ὦ λογισμὲ τέκνων παθῶν τύραννε καὶ εὐσέβεια μητρὶ τέκνων ποθεινοτέρα

O reason, tyrant over the passions that concern children, and piety more desired by a mother than her children!

μήτηρ δυεῖν προκειμένων εὐσεβείας καὶ τῆς ἑπτὰ υἱῶν σωτηρίας προσκαίρου κατὰ τὴν τοῦ τυράννου ὑπόσχεσιν

When two options lay before the mother, piety and the temporary safety of her seven sons according to the tyrant's promise,

τὴν εὐσέβειαν μᾶλλον ἠγάπησεν τὴν σῴζουσαν εἰς αἰωνίαν ζωὴν κατὰ θεόν

she loved piety more, the piety that saves unto eternal life according to God.

ὦ τίνα τρόπον ἠθολογήσαιμι φιλότεκνα γονέων πάθη ψυχῆς τε καὶ μορφῆς ὁμοιότητα εἰς μικρὸν παιδὸς χαρακτῆρα θαυμάσιον ἐναποσφραγίζομεν μάλιστα διὰ τὸ τῶν παθῶν τοῖς γεννηθεῖσιν τὰς μητέρας τῶν πατέρων καθεστάναι συμπαθεστέρας

O how shall I describe parental affections, and the likeness both of soul and form that we imprint wondrously upon the small pattern of a child, especially because through the passions mothers are made more sympathetic than fathers toward those born to them?

ὅσῳ γὰρ καὶ ἀσθενόψυχοι καὶ πολυγονώτεραι ὑπάρχουσιν αἱ μητέρες τοσούτῳ μᾶλλόν εἰσιν φιλοτεκνότεραι

For in proportion as mothers are weaker in spirit and more prolific, so much more are they lovers of their children.

πασῶν δὲ τῶν μητέρων ἐγένετο ἡ τῶν ἑπτὰ παίδων μήτηρ φιλοτεκνοτέρα ἥτις ἑπτὰ κυοφορίαις τὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐπιφυτευομένη φιλοστοργίαν

And of all mothers, the mother of the seven boys proved more fond of her children, since through seven pregnancies she had implanted her affection toward them.

καὶ διὰ πολλὰς τὰς καθ' ἕκαστον αὐτῶν ὠδῖνας ἠναγκασμένη τὴν εἰς αὐτοὺς ἔχειν συμπάθειαν

And through the many birth-pangs attending each one of them she was compelled to feel sympathy toward them.

διὰ τὸν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν φόβον ὑπερεῖδεν τὴν τῶν τέκνων πρόσκαιρον σωτηρίαν

Yet because of her fear toward God she disregarded the temporary safety of her children.

οὐ μὴν δὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τὴν καλοκἀγαθίαν τῶν υἱῶν καὶ τὴν πρὸς τὸν νόμον αὐτῶν εὐπείθειαν μείζω τὴν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἔσχεν φιλοστοργίαν

And yet, because of the nobility of her sons and their obedience toward the law, she held an even greater affection for them.

δίκαιοί τε γὰρ ἦσαν καὶ σώφρονες καὶ ἀνδρεῖοι καὶ μεγαλόψυχοι καὶ φιλάδελφοι καὶ φιλομήτορες οὕτως ὥστε καὶ μέχρι θανάτου τὰ νόμιμα φυλάσσοντας πείθεσθαι αὐτῇ

For they were righteous and self-controlled and brave and magnanimous and brother-loving and devoted to their mother, so that even unto death, while keeping the lawful commands, they obeyed her.

ἀλλ' ὅμως καίπερ τοσούτων ὄντων τῶν περὶ τὴν φιλοτεκνίαν εἰς συμπάθειαν ἑλκόντων τὴν μητέρα ἐπ' οὐδενὸς αὐτῶν τὸν λογισμὸν αὐτῆς αἱ παμποίκιλοι βάσανοι ἴσχυσαν μετατρέψαι

But nevertheless, although there were so many things drawing the mother toward sympathy because of love for children, the many-colored tortures were not strong enough to turn her reason in the case of any one of them.

ἀλλὰ καὶ καθ' ἕνα παῖδα καὶ ὁμοῦ πάντας ἡ μήτηρ ἐπὶ τὸν τῆς εὐσεβείας προετρέπετο θάνατον

Rather, both over each son individually and over all of them together the mother kept urging them on to death for the sake of piety.

ὦ φύσις ἱερὰ καὶ φίλτρα γονέων καὶ γένεσι φιλόστοργε καὶ τροφεία καὶ μητέρων ἀδάμαστα πάθη

O holy nature and parental affections and loving birth and nurture and the unconquerable passions of mothers!

καθένα στρεβλούμενον καὶ φλεγόμενον ὁρῶσα μήτηρ οὐ μετεβάλλετο διὰ τὴν εὐσέβειαν

Seeing each one tortured and burned, the mother did not change because of piety.

τὰς σάρκας τῶν τέκνων ἑώρα περὶ τὸ πῦρ τηκομένας καὶ τοὺς τῶν ποδῶν καὶ χειρῶν δακτύλους ἐπὶ γῆς σπαίροντας καὶ τὰς τῶν κεφαλῶν μέχρι τῶν περὶ τὰ γένεια σάρκας ὥσπερ προσωπεῖα προκειμένας

She saw the flesh of her children melting around the fire, the fingers of their feet and hands scattered upon the ground, and the flesh of their heads down to the parts about the beard lying before her like masks.

ὦ πικροτέρων νῦν πόνων πειρασθεῖσα μήτηρ ἤπερ τῶν ἐπ' αὐτοῖς ὠδίνων

O mother, tested now by pains more bitter than the birth-pangs over them!

ὦ μόνη γύναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν ὁλόκληρον ἀποκυήσασα

O only woman who gave birth to piety in its wholeness!

οὐ μετέτρεψέν σε πρωτοτόκος ἀποπνέων οὐδὲ δεύτερος εἰς σὲ οἰκτρὸν βλέπων ἐν βασάνοις οὐ τρίτος ἀποψύχων

The firstborn, breathing out his life, did not turn you, nor the second looking pitiably toward you, in his tortures, nor the third as he expired.

οὐδὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἑνὸς ἑκάστου θεωροῦσα ταυρηδὸν ἐπὶ τῶν βασάνων ὁρῶντας τὸν αὐτὸν αἰκισμὸν καὶ τοὺς μυκτῆρας προσημειουμένους τὸν θάνατον αὐτῶν οὐκ ἔκλαυσας

Nor, as you saw the eyes of each one fixed fiercely upon the same torture and their nostrils foretokening their death, did you weep.

ἐπὶ σαρξὶν τέκνων ὁρῶσα σάρκας τέκνων ἀποκαιομένας καὶ ἐπὶ χερσὶν χεῖρας ἀποτεμνομένας καὶ ἐπὶ κεφαλαῖς κεφαλὰς ἀποδειροτομουμένας καὶ ἐπὶ νεκροῖς νεκροὺς πίπτοντας καὶ πολυάνδριον ὁρῶσα τῶν τέκνων τὸ χωρίον διὰ τῶν βασάνων οὐκ ἐδάκρυσας

Seeing flesh upon the flesh of your children burning, and hands being cut off over hands, and heads flayed over heads, and dead sons falling upon dead sons, and the place becoming a mass grave of your children through the tortures, you did not shed tears.

οὐχ οὕτως σειρήνιοι μελῳδίαι οὐδὲ κύκνειοι πρὸς φιληκοί̈αν φωναὶ τοὺς ἀκούοντας ἐφέλκονται ὡς τέκνων φωναὶ μετὰ βασάνων μητέρα φωνούντων

Not in this way do siren songs or swanlike melodies draw those who hear them, as the voices of children calling to their mother amid tortures.

πηλίκαις καὶ πόσαις τότε ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν βασανιζομένων τροχοῖς τε καὶ καυτηρίοις ἐβασανίζετο βασάνοις

By how great and by how many tortures then was the mother herself tortured, while her sons were being tortured with wheels and cauteries!

ἀλλὰ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτῆς ὁ εὐσεβὴς λογισμὸς ἐν αὐτοῖς τοῖς πάθεσιν ἀνδρειώσας ἐπέτεινεν τὴν πρόσκαιρον φιλοτεκνίαν παριδεῖν

But devout reason, strengthening her inward parts in the midst of those sufferings, enabled her to overlook her temporary love for children.

καίπερ ἑπτὰ τέκνων ὁρῶσα ἀπώλειαν καὶ τὴν τῶν στρεβλῶν πολύπλοκον ποικιλίαν ἁπάσας ἡ γενναία μήτηρ ἐξέλυσεν διὰ τὴν πρὸς θεὸν πίστιν

And though she saw the destruction of seven children and the elaborate variety of the tortures, the noble mother released them all because of her faith toward God.

καθάπερ γὰρ ἐν βουλευτηρίῳ τῇ ἑαυτῆς ψυχῇ δεινοὺς ὁρῶσα συμβούλους φύσιν καὶ γένεσιν καὶ φιλοτεκνίαν καὶ τέκνων στρέβλας

For as though in a council within her own soul she saw terrible advisers: nature and kinship and love for children and the tortures of her children.

δύο ψήφους κρατοῦσα μήτηρ θανατηφόρον τε καὶ σωτήριον ὑπὲρ τέκνων

The mother, holding two ballots on behalf of her children, one death-bearing and one saving,

οὐκ ἐπέγνω τὴν σῴζουσαν ἑπτὰ υἱοὺς πρὸς ὀλίγον χρόνον σωτηρίαν

did not choose the safety that would preserve her seven sons for a little while.

ἀλλὰ τῆς θεοσεβοῦς Αβρααμ καρτερίας ἡ θυγάτηρ ἐμνήσθη

Instead, the daughter of godly Abraham remembered his steadfast endurance.

ὦ μήτηρ ἔθνους ἔκδικε τοῦ νόμου καὶ ὑπερασπίστρια τῆς εὐσεβείας καὶ τοῦ διὰ σπλάγχνων ἀγῶνος ἀθλοφόρε

O mother, avenger of the nation, defender of the law, champion of piety, and prize-winning victor in the struggle through your inward affections!

ὦ ἀρρένων πρὸς καρτερίαν γενναιοτέρα καὶ ἀνδρῶν πρὸς ὑπομονὴν ἀνδρειοτέρα

O woman nobler than men in steadfastness and braver than men in endurance!

καθάπερ γὰρ ἡ Νωε κιβωτὸς ἐν τῷ κοσμοπληθεῖ κατακλυσμῷ κοσμοφοροῦσα καρτερῶς ὑπέμεινεν τοὺς κλύδωνας

For just as Noah's ark, bearing the world in the world-filled flood, steadfastly endured the waves,

οὕτως σὺ ἡ νομοφύλαξ πανταχόθεν ἐν τῷ τῶν παθῶν περιαντλουμένη κατακλυσμῷ καὶ καρτεροῖς ἀνέμοις ταῖς τῶν υἱῶν βασάνοις συνεχομένη γενναίως ὑπέμεινας τοὺς ὑπὲρ τῆς εὐσεβείας χειμῶνας

so you, guardian of the law, buffeted from every side in the flood of passions and hard winds by the tortures of your sons, nobly endured the storms on behalf of piety.
