The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 16ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ ΙϚ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The mother's steadfast exhortation is held forth as the climactic proof that devout reason can rule even the most powerful maternal grief, pain, and fear.

Translation & textual notes

The book turns here from narration to explicit interpretation, presenting the mother of the seven brothers as the climactic proof that devout reason rules even the fiercest natural passions. The chapter contrasts a merely natural maternal lament with the mother's actual exhortation, thereby framing her speech as the victory of covenantal piety over grief, pain, and death.

If, then, even a woman, aged and the mother of seven children, endured while watching the death-bound tortures of her children, it is plain that devout reason is sovereign over the passions.

inferential climax to the argument about reasonεἰ δὲ τοίνυν καὶ
The narrator draws the argument to a pointed conclusion: the mother’s endurance proves that pious reason can govern even the strongest natural affections.
