The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 18ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ ΙΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The book closes by exhorting Israel to honor the martyrs, recalling the mother's scriptural catechesis of her sons, and sealing the whole argument with divine justice, covenant memory, and doxology.

Translation & textual notes

Direct exhortation to Israel, a retrospective account of the mother's scriptural catechesis, and a final declaration of divine justice against the tyrant bring the book to its close here. By ending with remembered biblical examples and a doxology, the chapter binds martyrdom, covenant instruction, and eschatological reward into the book's final appeal.
