The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 5ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Eleazar stands before Antiochus and answers the tyrant's appeal to expediency by presenting obedience to the law as the truest philosophy and the surest mastery over appetite, fear, and honor.

Translation & textual notes

The philosophical and political confrontation between Antiochus and Eleazar is staged here. The tyrant's appeal to expediency, nature, and self-preservation is answered by a sustained defense of the divine law, in which Eleazar argues that pious reason governs appetite, pain, civic honor, and even old age itself.
