The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 6ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ Ϛ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Eleazar's torture, refusal of pious pretense, and final prayer prove that pious reason can master pain and death no less than pleasure, making his martyrdom an atoning witness for the nation.

Translation & textual notes

Eleazar's torture, his refusal of a compassionate deception, his final prayer, and the author's explicit conclusion that pious reason rules the passions are narrated here. The chapter presses the argument from discourse into bodily extremity, showing that reason governed by the law masters not only pleasure but also pain, fear, and the approach of death itself.

When in this way he had argued back against the tyrant's appeals, the bodyguards standing by dragged Eleazar harshly to the instruments of torture.

narrative-developmentasyndeton
The transition from debate to torture is abrupt. Rational refutation does not silence tyranny, so the tyrant answers argument with violence.
