Theme

Daniel's penitential prayer is answered with the seventy weeks.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Daniel 9 here follows the Old Greek Septuagint form of the chapter. The first half is one of the book's densest penitential prayers: Daniel reads Jeremiah's seventy-year prophecy in light of Jerusalem's desolation, then responds not with speculation first but with fasting, confession, and covenant appeal. The prayer repeatedly balances divine righteousness and human shame, rehearsing Israel's rebellion against the law and prophets while asking God to act for the sake of his own name, city, and sanctuary. The second half turns from penitence to revelation when Gabriel interprets the larger pattern of history through the famous seventy weeks. In the Greek wording, the oracle binds together the completion of sin, atonement, everlasting righteousness, the sealing of vision and prophet, and the desolating crisis that falls on city and sanctuary. Daniel 9 therefore stands at the intersection of exilic repentance and apocalyptic chronology: the chapter insists that history is not merely endured but interpreted under covenant judgment, divine mercy, and a fixed redemptive timetable.
