The Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣΤΗΣ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Appointed times order human action, yet the heart still strains toward a totality it cannot master.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ecclesiastes 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Ecclesiastes 3 is one of the chapter's great meditations on order and limit: every human action has its appointed season, yet the God who orders times also places an unresolved sense of totality in the human heart. The chapter moves from the poem of times to reflections on labor, joy, justice, mortality, and the shared creatureliness of human beings and beasts. Throughout, Qoheleth does not dissolve the goodness of ordinary life; rather, he insists that enjoyment, work, and judgment must all be understood within divinely set boundaries that human beings cannot finally master.
