The Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 5ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣΤΗΣ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Reverent speech before God and the unstable lure of wealth are set against the modest good of receiving one's portion.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ecclesiastes 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter moves from reverent speech before God to the instability of wealth and the limited, God-given good of enjoying one's portion. Qoheleth warns that haste in worship, rash vows, bureaucratic injustice, and acquisitive desire all expose the same human illusion: life can be secured by words, control, or accumulation. Against that illusion, the chapter repeatedly recalls creaturely limits under heaven and commends a humbler good, receiving food, drink, labor, and gladness as gifts granted by God rather than achievements mastered by human striving. Versification follows the LXX.

Do not be hasty with your mouth, and let not your heart be quick to bring forth a word before God, because God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.

Worship warningasyndeton
Qoheleth grounds restraint in the distance between the Creator in heaven and the human speaker on earth, so reverence is shown by measured speech.
