The Book of Haggai, Chapter 1ΑΓΓΑΙΟΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Neglected worship is exposed through drought until the remnant rises to rebuild the Lord's house.

Translation & textual notes

Haggai 1 opens the prophet's first dated oracle in the reign of Darius and frames the rebuilding of the temple as the decisive test of post-exilic fidelity. The chapter moves from accusation to economic diagnosis, then from summons to obedience, showing that the people's material frustration is interpreted through covenantal neglect and reversed only when the Lord stirs them to resume work on his house.
