The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 1ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Consecrated before birth, Jeremiah receives words, warning signs, and a fortified calling.

Translation & textual notes

Jeremiah 1 serves as the book's formal commissioning narrative. The opening verses anchor the prophet historically in Anathoth and in the final decades of Judah before Jerusalem's exile, then the chapter turns to the divine word that set Jeremiah apart before birth. The core movement balances inadequacy and assurance: Jeremiah protests his youth, but the Lord places his own words in the prophet's mouth and appoints him over nations and kingdoms for both tearing down and rebuilding. The two vision reports of the almond rod and the boiling cauldron interpret the commission, showing that the Lord is watchful over his word and that judgment from the north is about to break upon Judah for covenant infidelity. It closes by hardening Jeremiah for conflict, portraying him as a fortified city and bronze wall who will be opposed yet not overcome because the Lord is with him to deliver him.
