The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 2ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Early love gives way to broken cisterns, idols, and self-inflicted shame.

Translation & textual notes

Jeremiah 2 is the book's opening covenant lawsuit against Judah. It begins with the Lord's remembered tenderness toward Israel's early devotion in the wilderness and then turns sharply to the betrayal by which the people traded the living God for emptiness. The unit layers accusation through recollection, interrogation, and vivid metaphor: leaders forgot the Lord, the people polluted a fruitful land, and the nation exchanged the fountain of living water for cracked cisterns. From there the oracle exposes the consequences of apostasy in political humiliation, futile reliance on Egypt and Assyria, sexualized images of cultic infidelity, and the stubborn refusal to admit guilt. It closes by unmasking Judah's self-justification and by declaring that the false hopes she chases will leave her ashamed and empty-handed.

And he said, Thus says the Lord: I remembered the mercy of your youth and the love of your maturity, in your following the Holy One of Israel, says the Lord.
