The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 3ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Apostate sisters are summoned to return under promised shepherds and renewed Zion.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Jeremiah 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The argument is structured by the marriage-and-divorce metaphor already underway in Jeremiah 2, but it presses the image harder: Judah has made herself publicly impure, Israel has already received a writ of dismissal, and yet the Lord still commands return. The second half holds together accusation and astonishing promise, moving from exposure of treachery to visions of restored shepherding, Jerusalem as the Lord's throne, Judah and Israel reunited from exile, and a spoken confession that false hilltop worship can never save. Greek versification is followed here.

1

If a man sends away his wife, and she departs from him and becomes another man's, would she return to him again? Would not that woman be utterly defiled? Yet you have prostituted yourself with many shepherds and kept returning to me, says the Lord.

Indictmentasyndeton
Opens with a legal and marital analogy that makes Judah's return seem impossible and therefore morally shocking.
