The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 4ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Uncircumcised hearts bring northern invasion, cosmic unraveling, and Zion's labor pains.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Jeremiah 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The unit belongs to the same early Jeremiac preaching cycle as Jeremiah 2-3, but here the summons to return immediately opens into alarm. Repentance is described in terms of breaking up new soil, circumcising the heart, and swearing truly in the Lord; then the scene fills with trumpet calls, a lion from the north, stunned rulers, deceptive assurances shattered by the sword, the prophet's own internal convulsion, and a vision of the land collapsing back toward pre-creation chaos. It closes by exposing the futility of cosmetic self-beautifying before predatory lovers and by personifying Zion as a laboring woman whose life ebbs away among the slain. Greek versification is followed here.
