The shattered flask at Hinnom announces irreparable bloodguilt and ruin.

Translation & textual notes

Jeremiah 19 binds symbolic action to public judgment. The prophet is told to buy a potter's earthen flask, take civic and priestly elders, and proclaim the Lord's accusation in the valley linked with slaughter and burning. The center of the chapter names Judah's crimes plainly: forsaking the Lord, profaning the place with foreign cults, filling it with innocent blood, and offering sons in the fire to Baal. The sign then turns physical, as the flask is shattered before the witnesses to show that Jerusalem will be broken past repair, its houses made unclean through astral worship, and its people reduced to siege, death, and disgrace. The final verse returns the oracle from the valley to the temple court so that the enacted warning becomes a public sentence against the whole city.
