The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 31ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ ΛΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Moab's pride, false ease, and Chemosh cannot survive city-by-city ruin.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Jeremiah 31 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In the Septuagint order this chapter is the oracle against Moab. It moves from opening cries over fallen cities into commands to flee, taunts over Moab's arrogance, and a long catalogue of towns overtaken by judgment. The middle of the chapter explains the force of the fall: Moab had rested securely like wine left on its lees, trusting in strongholds, glory, and the god Chemosh. Because of that settled pride, the Lord now pours the nation out, shames its cult, and turns its former laughter at Israel back upon itself. Yet the oracle is not emotionally flat. Its closing movement becomes a lament, with the prophet's heart sounding like mourning pipes even while the Lord explains the ruin as the smashing of a useless vessel and seals it with the familiar terror-pit-snare pattern. Greek versification is followed here.
