The Book of Job, Chapter 42ΙΩΒ ΜΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

This final chapter completes the movement from dispute to restoration.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 42 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This final chapter completes the movement from dispute to restoration. Job's response is no longer argumentative but confessional: he acknowledges God's unrestricted power, admits that he spoke beyond his knowledge, and contrasts former hearing with present seeing. In the LXX phrasing, his repentance is expressed as self-abasement and identification with dust and ashes. The chapter then turns outward. The Lord rebukes the friends for not speaking rightly, yet appoints Job as their intercessor, so that the sufferer becomes mediator for the mistaken comforters. Restoration follows prayer: Job's fortunes are doubled, his family circle regathers, and his final prosperity exceeds the former state. The daughters receive names and inheritance, emphasizing beauty, dignity, and abundance in the renewed household. The LXX chapter concludes with an extended traditional notice absent from many shorter modern editions, linking Job with Jobab, situating him in the land of Ausitis near Idumea and Arabia, and relating him to Edomite royal traditions. However that appendix is assessed historically, its narrative function here is clear: Job's story ends not in unresolved ruin but in vindication, intercession, long life, and hope of rising again with those whom the Lord raises.

And Job died, old and full of days. And it is written that he will rise again with those whom the Lord raises up. This man is interpreted from the Syrian book as dwelling in the land of Ausitis, on the borders of Idumea and Arabia. His former name was Jobab; having taken an Arabian wife, he fathered a son whose name was Ennon. He himself was the son of Zare, of the sons of Esau, and on his mother's side of Bosorra, so that he was fifth from Abraham. And these are the kings who reigned in Edom, over whose land he himself also first ruled: Balak son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dennaba; after Balak, Jobab, the one called Job; after him Asom, who was governor from the land of the Temanites; after him Adad son of Barad, who cut down Midian in the plain of Moab, and the name of his city was Geththaim. And the friends who came to him were Eliphaz of the sons of Esau, king of the Temanites, Bildad tyrant of the Shuhites, and Zophar king of the Minaeans.
