Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The opening chapter establishes Judith's deliberately stylized imperial world. Nebuchadnezzar is cast as king of the Assyrians in Nineveh, while Arphaxad's Median power is given monumental architectural and geopolitical scope (vv. 1-6). The long catalogue of regions summoned into Assyrian service (vv. 7-10) and the peoples' contemptuous refusal (vv. 11-12) turn the coming war into a universal contest over submission. The chapter closes with Nebuchadnezzar's crushing victory over Arphaxad and his 120-day revel (vv. 13-16), the narrative hinge that frees imperial wrath to swing westward toward Judea.
