The Book of Judith, Chapter 2ΙΟΥΔΙΘ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Judith 2 converts Nebuchadnezzar's anger into policy and then into motion.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Judith 2 converts Nebuchadnezzar's anger into policy and then into motion. The opening verses stage a royal war-council and the commission of Holofernes, whose orders combine the ancient submission formula of 'earth and water' with explicit instructions for massacre, deportation, and delayed punishment (vv. 1-13). The middle of the chapter dwells on numbers, pack animals, provisions, treasure, and battle order (vv. 14-20), turning logistics into a rhetoric of overwhelming force. The final section traces Holofernes' route through Cilicia, Mesopotamia, Midian, and Damascus (vv. 21-28), where scorched-earth violence against fields, flocks, cities, and young men shows that the western campaign will proceed by punitive terror before it narrows into siege.
