Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Judith 3 shows that surrender to Holofernes does not preserve local autonomy or local worship. Coastal and lowland populations approach with peaceful words and offer land, produce, flocks, cities, and persons as servile property (vv. 1-4), and Holofernes secures their strongholds while drafting selected men into his alliance (vv. 5-7). The theological center comes in v. 8, where the campaign includes the destruction of local gods and sacred groves so that Nebuchadnezzar alone may be invoked as god by every nation, tongue, and tribe. The final verses move the army into Esdraelon opposite Judea (vv. 9-10), turning generalized imperial submission into immediate strategic pressure on the holy land.
