Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter registers the shock wave caused by Holofernes' earlier devastations and turns that fear into a coordinated theological defense. Israel fortifies the mountain approaches and vulnerable settlements (vv. 1-8), but the narrative insists that the decisive preparation is penitential rather than merely tactical: the people humble themselves, don sackcloth, cover the altar, and beg that their children, wives, cities, and sancta not be handed over to pagan triumph (vv. 9-12). The closing verses hold together popular fasting and priestly liturgy (vv. 13-15), so that the chapter becomes the book's first sustained picture of siege-readiness as communal prayer under threat.

And the sons of Israel who were dwelling in Judea heard everything that Holofernes, the commander in chief of King Nebuchadnezzar of the Assyrians, had done to the nations, and how he had plundered all their sanctuaries and handed them over to destruction.

Threat reportκαὶ
The chapter opens by summarizing Holofernes’ sacrilegious violence among the nations so that Judah’s reaction is grounded in concrete precedent.
