Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 7 follows the Septuagintal form of the siege narrative, where strategy turns not on battering walls but on control of water. The chapter is carefully staged: military reconnaissance (vv. 1-7), allied counsel (vv. 8-15), physical encirclement (vv. 16-18), then civic collapse inside Bethulia (vv. 19-29). Water imagery binds the movements together. The spring at the foot of the mountain is the tactical hinge, the emptied vessels and cisterns are the experiential hinge, and Uzziah’s five-day delay at the close creates the theological hinge that Judith will answer. The chapter therefore does more than describe danger; it narrates the conversion of external siege into internal crisis, so that deliverance must address fear, leadership, and faith together.
