Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Judith 6 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter records the immediate aftermath of Achior's warning. Holofernes answers theological caution with imperial blasphemy and a sentence designed to make Achior share Israel's anticipated destruction (vv. 1-9). Achior is then delivered to the vicinity of Bethulia, where the geographical logic of Judith 4 is confirmed in action: the mountain ascent is defended, the Assyrian servants withdraw, and the Judeans receive the abandoned counselor into the city (vv. 10-17). The final verses move from narration to worship as Israel interprets Achior's testimony and pleads for mercy against pagan arrogance (vv. 18-21). The chapter therefore links blasphemous threat, faithful reception of a foreign witness, and corporate prayer before the first appearance of Judith herself.
