Theme

Jerusalem appears as a widowed city, bereaved mother, and publicly shamed captive.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Lamentations 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The opening lament personifies Jerusalem as widowed city, bereaved mother, and publicly shamed captive. The poem moves from third-person description of the ruined city to first-person speech from Jerusalem herself, so that observation becomes participation. The key themes are abandonment, reversal, famine, the justice of the Lord, and the city's plea that passersby, nations, and finally God himself see her pain. The acrostic form of the Hebrew original stands behind the chapter's ordered grief, but in Greek the dominant effect is still cumulative: roads mourn, priests groan, children go captive, friends betray, enemies rejoice, and the city asks that divine judgment fall back upon those who now gloat over her fall.
