The Book of Malachi, Chapter 3ΜΑΛΑΧΙΑΣ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Lord comes to purify worship, judge covenant breakers, and reveal the final difference between the faithful and the wicked.

Translation & textual notes

The book's accusations reach their theological climax by announcing the Lord's imminent coming, the purification of worship, judgment against covenant violators, and the final distinction between those who fear God and those who dismiss his service as vain. The chapter moves from temple-focused refinement to social and economic indictment, then to promises of remembrance, vindication, and eschatological reversal, so that fidelity to the covenant is framed as both present obedience and preparation for the day of the Lord.

Behold, I am sending out my messenger, and he will look to the way before my face; and suddenly the Lord whom you seek will come into his own temple, even the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Behold, he is coming, says the Lord Almighty.

Programmatic announcement of the coming Lord and his forerunnerasyndeton
The verse opens the chapter with a twofold expectation: a preparatory messenger and the Lord’s own arrival. Temple expectation and covenant longing are fused, but the coming is presented as unsettling rather than merely comforting.

Rhetorical warning about the severity of the coming visitationasyndeton
The questions overturn any easy desire for divine intervention by emphasizing its purgative force. The imagery of fire and cleansing solution presents the coming one as one who exposes and refines.
