The Book of Micah, Chapter 1ΜΙΧΑΙΑΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Judgment descends on Samaria and Judah in a chain of lament.

Translation & textual notes

A prophetic superscription anchors Micah's ministry in the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah and then gives way immediately to a cosmic theophany. The Lord comes forth from his holy dwelling as witness against his people, and the language of melting mountains and dissolving valleys renders judgment as a world-shaking event rather than a merely local political crisis. The oracle names Samaria and Jerusalem as the centers of Jacob's transgression and Judah's sin and then turns from capital cities to a sequence of town-laments whose wordplay sharpens the rhetoric of loss. By the end, beauty, security, and inheritance have all yielded to shaving, baldness, and exile, making public mourning the fitting response to covenantal catastrophe.

And the word of the Lord came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham and Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, concerning what he saw about Samaria and Jerusalem.

Chapter headingasyndeton
The superscription identifies Micah, locates his ministry within Judah's royal chronology, and names both Samaria and Jerusalem as the burden of his vision. The oracle is thus framed from the outset as addressing the two political-religious centers of the divided people.
