The Book of Nahum, Chapter 1ΝΑΟΥΜ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The avenging Lord destroys Nineveh yet shelters those who wait.

Translation & textual notes

A burden against Nineveh first unfolds as a theophanic hymn to the Lord's jealous and avenging majesty and then turns that vision into a direct oracle of doom against Assyria. Two themes that govern the rest of the book are held together here: the irresistible force of divine judgment against hostile powers and the Lord's covenantal goodness toward those who wait for him in distress. Storm, flood, and earthquake imagery place Nineveh's downfall within a cosmic frame, while the closing verses begin to separate the fates of oppressor and oppressed by promising the breaking of the yoke and the extinction of Nineveh's name and gods.
