The Book of Odes, Chapter 5ΩΙΔΑΙ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

An Isaianic prayer-canticle binding longing for God, judgment, discipline, and resurrection hope into one watchful song.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter presents a prayer-canticle drawn from Isaiah 26 and begins not with the strong-city opening of the chapter but with the inward longing, judgment, discipline, and resurrection hope of its later movement. Night-long desire for God, the failure of the ungodly to learn righteousness, and the plea for peace lead into confession that the Lord alone is known. The canticle then passes through death, chastening, labor-pain, and resurrection promise before closing with the summons to hide briefly until wrath passes. Its appended Jonah heading marks the transition to the next ode in the collection.

ἐκ νυκτὸς ὀρθρίζει τὸ πνεῦμά μου πρὸς σέ ὁ θεός διότι φῶς τὰ προστάγματά σου ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς δικαιοσύνην μάθετε οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

From the night my spirit rises early toward you, O God, because your ordinances are light upon the earth; learn righteousness, you who dwell on the earth.

Opening longing for Godἐκ
The canticle begins in night-long longing rather than public proclamation. Desire for God and the light of his ordinances frame the chapter as a prayer of inward seeking and moral instruction.

Because of your fear, O Lord, we conceived in the womb and travailed and gave birth; we brought forth the spirit of your salvation upon the earth. We shall not fall, but those dwelling upon the earth shall fall.
