The Book of Psalms, Chapter 1ΨΑΛΜΟΙ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Blessedness grows from delight in the Lord's law, while the wicked are chaff on the way to judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. As the threshold psalm of the collection, it sets the Psalter's moral and meditative horizon by contrasting the way of the righteous with the way of the ungodly. The poem moves from beatitude and negation, to delight in the Lord's law, to the image of the well-watered tree, and finally to the instability and judgment of the wicked. Its compact form gives the whole book a wisdom frame: prayer and praise are to be heard as the speech of those learning to inhabit the Lord's way. Versification follows the LXX.

Beatitudeμακάριος
