Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

Exiles refuse to turn Zion's grief into entertainment, cling to Jerusalem in memory, and ask God to remember the destroyers.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 136 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Exiles refuse to turn Zion's grief into entertainment, cling to Jerusalem in memory, and ask God to remember the destroyers. It begins with tears, silence, and abandoned instruments as the captives remember Zion and resist the demand to perform sacred songs in a foreign land. It then turns into an oath never to forget Jerusalem, followed by prayers for the Lord to remember Edom's complicity and for Babylon's violence to be answered in kind. The movement is from grief, to fidelity, to imprecation rooted in devastated memory. Versification follows the LXX.
