Theme

Pressed into darkness, the speaker remembers God's deeds and begs for guidance, life, and rescue.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 142 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Pressed into darkness, the speaker abandons self-defense, remembers God's past deeds, and begs for guidance, life, and rescue for God's name's sake. The turning point comes in remembered acts of God, uplifted hands, and repeated requests for guidance, deliverance, and life for the sake of God's name. The final note entrusts judgment on enemies to the Lord's mercy because the speaker belongs to him as servant. Versification follows the LXX.
