Theme

The king blesses God as warrior and rescuer while asking him to descend against foreign deceivers.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 143 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The king blesses God as warrior and rescuer, asks him to descend against foreign deceivers, and envisions a people flourishing under his protection. It asks the heavenly warrior to descend, scatter enemies, and rescue the king from deceitful foreigners; then it vows a new song and imagines the blessedness of a people enjoying secure sons, adorned daughters, full storehouses, strong herds, and streets without alarm under the Lord's rule. Versification follows the LXX.
