Theme

Jerusalem praises the Lord for rebuilding the city and gathering Israel's scattered people.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 146 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This Hallelujah hymn, again linked with Haggai and Zechariah in the superscription, praises the Lord for rebuilding Jerusalem and gathering Israel's scattered people. It moves from a general summons to praise into celebration of the Lord as healer of the brokenhearted, knower of the stars, and upholder of the humble. The closing strophe combines creation and providence: the God who clothes the sky with clouds, gives rain and grass, and feeds beasts and ravens does not delight in military strength but in those who fear him and hope in his mercy. Versification follows the LXX.
