Theme

Heaven, earth, creatures, and peoples alike are summoned into the Lord's praise.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 148 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This sweeping Hallelujah hymn summons every level of creation to praise the Lord, moving from the highest heavens down through the depths of the earth to human society itself. The first half calls angels, celestial lights, upper waters, and sea deeps to join the chorus because all were created and fixed by the divine command. The latter half gathers weather, landscapes, animals, rulers, and generations of people into the same praise before closing with the exaltation of the Lord's unique name and the raised horn of the people near to him. Versification follows the LXX.
