Theme

David's great thanksgiving celebrates rescue, warrior strength, and the Lord's covenant faithfulness to his king.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 17 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition. In LXX numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 18 in the Hebrew tradition and preserves the great Davidic thanksgiving that also appears in 2 Kingdoms 22. It opens with an extended superscription linking the song to the day of deliverance from Saul and every enemy, then unfolds through love-confession, descriptions of mortal distress, a violent theophany of divine intervention, deliverance, vindication, martial empowerment, victory over hostile peoples, and a closing doxology that ties the Lord's saving mercy to his anointed king and Davidic seed. Versification follows the LXX.

For the end, to the servant of the Lord, to David, the words that he spoke to the Lord of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

Historical superscriptionasyndeton
The psalm opens with an unusually full heading that frames the whole song as retrospective thanksgiving, anchored in a specific day of rescue from Saul and every enemy.
