Theme

Under slander and distress, the singer entrusts life to the faithful God who shelters those who fear him.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 30 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition. In LXX numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 31 in the Hebrew tradition and is a psalm of trust that moves from urgent petition into remembered rescue, deep complaint, renewed confession of confidence, and finally communal exhortation. The superscription includes the unusual term ἐκστάσεως, which can suggest bewilderment, distress, or a state of being beside oneself and fits the psalm's movement between panic and restored assurance. Several lines became especially influential in later reception: v. 6, 'Into your hands I will commit my spirit,' stands at the center of Jewish and Christian prayer, while vv. 20-21 celebrate the hidden goodness and shelter the Lord stores up for those who fear him. The closing summons broadens one sufferer's deliverance into instruction for all the faithful: love the Lord, for he seeks faithfulness and strengthens those who hope in him. Versification follows the LXX.
