The Book of Psalms, Chapter 43ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΜΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Remembered victories sharpen the pain of present defeat as the people plead for divine help.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 43 follows the standard Septuagint form represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition. In LXX numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 44 in the Hebrew tradition and gives a communal lament that moves from remembered conquest to bewildered defeat. The poem first rehearses the ancestral story of God planting his people in the land, then confesses that Israel’s victories depended on God’s favor rather than military strength. From that confession it turns sharply into public disgrace, scattering, and taunt, yet the community insists that it has not abandoned the covenant. The closing appeal presses the paradox to its limit: the people are being treated like sheep for slaughter precisely for God’s sake, so the psalm ends by begging the Lord to wake, arise, and redeem for the sake of his name. Versification follows the LXX.
