Theme

Morning prayer sets the Lord's holiness against deceitful enemies and finds refuge in his guidance.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A morning prayer that begins with urgent appeal, passes through meditation on the Lord's holiness and the duplicity of the wicked, and ends in confidence that God shelters those who love his name. The speaker rises early to set his plea before the Lord, knowing that deceit, bloodshed, and lawlessness cannot stand in the divine presence. From that contrast comes the central petition: lead me in your righteousness and make your way straight before me while enemies surround and slander. It closes by widening from the individual suppliant to all who seek refuge, so that personal prayer becomes shared gladness beneath the Lord's protective favor. Versification follows the LXX.
