The Book of Psalms, Chapter 68ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΞΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Drowning, shame, and isolation drive one of the Psalter's fiercest cries for vindication.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 68 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This long lament moves from drowning imagery and public shame into one of the Septuagint's sharpest pleas for vindication. The speaker suffers hatred without cause, estrangement from kin, and mockery for zeal toward God's house, and he asks that his disgrace not spill over onto the faithful who wait for God. The middle of the psalm renews the rescue plea and then turns to fierce imprecation against persecutors who deepen the pain of one already struck by God. The closing movement rises from poverty and pain to vowed praise, summons the poor and then the whole creation to rejoice, and ends with confidence that God will save Zion and settle his servants there. Several lines became especially resonant in later Jewish and Christian reading, including the zeal for God's house and the offering of gall and vinegar. Versification follows the LXX.
