Theme

Jerusalem's desecration draws a communal plea for mercy amid bloodshed, shame, and mockery.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 78 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This communal lament grieves the desecration of Jerusalem after foreign nations invade God's inheritance, defile the sanctuary, and leave the holy people exposed to shame, bloodshed, and mockery. It presses from description of ruin into urgent petition: the singer asks how long divine anger will burn, calls for wrath to fall on the nations that ravaged Jacob, pleads that ancestral sins not determine the present, and appeals for help, atonement, and public vindication for the sake of God's name. The closing vow answers devastation with identity and praise, confessing that God's flock will keep proclaiming his praise from generation to generation. Versification follows the LXX.

A psalm for Asaph. O God, nations came into your inheritance; they defiled your holy temple; they made Jerusalem into a watch-hut in an orchard.

Superscription and opening complaintὁ θεός
The brief heading gives way at once to direct address: the psalm frames the catastrophe as an invasion of God's own inheritance and sanctuary.
