The Book of Psalms, Chapter 79ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΟΘ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Israel calls on its shepherd while humiliation, unanswered prayer, and public scorn press in.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 79 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This communal lament addresses God as Israel's shepherd while the nation experiences humiliation, unanswered prayer, and the apparent collapse of its protected life. The opening movement alternates invocation with the refrain asking God to restore his people and let his face shine, then the center of the psalm unfolds the vine metaphor: Israel was transplanted from Egypt, given room to root and spread, and then shockingly left exposed to passing plunderers and wild destruction. The closing appeal asks the God of hosts to look down, repair what his own right hand planted, uphold the man at his right hand, and renew the people so that they may live and call on his name once more. Versification follows the LXX.
