Theme

The loveliness of the Lord's dwelling places makes nearness to him the pilgrim's blessed joy.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 83 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This Korahite pilgrimage psalm celebrates the loveliness of the Lord's dwelling places and turns longing for the sanctuary into a theology of blessedness. After the superscription the singer aches for the courts of the Lord, imagines even the birds at home near the altars, and pronounces blessed those who dwell or journey toward Zion. The middle movement pictures pilgrims crossing the valley of weeping and advancing from strength to strength until God appears in Zion, after which the prayer asks God to regard his anointed. It closes by valuing a single day in God's courts above innumerable alternatives and by affirming that the Lord gives grace, glory, and every good thing to the upright. Versification follows the LXX.
