Theme

The nations are summoned to new-song praise because the Lord reigns and comes to judge.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 95 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A restoration hymn that summons the nations to a new song because the Lord alone reigns as creator and comes to judge in righteousness and truth. It moves from missionary proclamation among the nations to a contrast between the Lord and the gods of the peoples, then calls the families of the nations to bring glory into his holy courts. Its closing strophe announces the Lord's reign and imagines heaven, sea, field, and forest rejoicing because he comes to judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in truth. Versification follows the LXX.

Superscription and universal summonsᾄσατε
The heading locates the hymn in a restoration setting, and the repeated imperative immediately opens the psalm outward to the whole earth.
