The Lord's enthronement is revealed through cosmic upheaval and Zion's joy.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 96 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A royal-theophanic hymn in which the Lord's enthronement is revealed through cosmic upheaval, the shaming of idols, and the joy of Zion and the righteous. The superscription frames the poem with a Davidic setting, but the body of the chapter moves quickly into cosmic imagery: cloud, darkness, fire, lightning, melting mountains, and the heavens themselves bearing witness. The center of the psalm contrasts the shame of idol worshipers with Zion's joy, and the closing exhortation turns that revelation into an ethical summons for the righteous to hate evil, trust the Lord's preserving care, and rejoice in his holy rule. Versification follows the LXX.
