Theme

Those who call on God are marked for salvation; sinners meet judgment.

Translation & textual notes

A prayer of distress expands into confession of trust, hymn of praise, and an oracle-like contrast between the salvation of the righteous and the inescapable judgment of sinners. The opening testimony recalls calling upon the name of the Lord in affliction and finding rescue because God is the hope and refuge of the poor (15:1). That confidence leads naturally into doxology: true praise, offered from heart, lips, and fitting instrument, becomes both the proper human response to God and a mark of the one who will not be shaken when destructive judgment breaks out against sinners (15:2-5). The center of the psalm states that the sign of God rests upon the righteous for salvation (15:6), a concise claim that governs the following contrasts. Famine, sword, and death flee far from the righteous but pursue and overtake those who practice lawlessness (15:7-10). The closing lines extend judgment into inheritance and posterity, ending with a final antithesis: the God-fearing receive mercy and life in God's compassion, while sinners perish forever at the Lord's visitation of the earth in judgment (15:11-13). The psalm therefore binds liturgical praise and eschatological confidence together: truthful thanksgiving is not ornamental but expressive of a community already marked off for divine deliverance.
