The Psalms of Solomon, Chapter 2ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jerusalem falls for its sins, and the arrogant conqueror falls in turn.

Translation & textual notes

A long communal lament over Jerusalem's desecration and humiliation refuses to treat the catastrophe as an injustice on God's part. The poem explains the trampling of the altar, the exile of sons and daughters, and the city's public shame as the consequence of Jerusalem's own prior profanation of the Lord's gifts. Even so, the psalm does not leave judgment at that first stage. Once the conquering ruler exceeds the role of chastening instrument and acts in mockery, rapacity, and furious pride, the speaker appeals for God to judge him as well. The latter half of the chapter narrates that reversal with vivid satisfaction, portraying the blasphemous tyrant exposed, dishonored, and cast down. The psalm therefore develops a double theology of judgment: God is righteous in disciplining his own people, and equally righteous in humbling the nations when they overreach in arrogance.

When the sinner grew proud with the battering-ram, he cast down strong walls, and you did not hinder him.

Narrative openingasyndeton
The poem begins by recalling the invader's success as something permitted within God's judicial governance rather than outside it.
