Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Wakeful praise and disciplined righteousness lead to life; sinners heap up ruin.

Translation & textual notes

A compact wisdom-psalm built on contrast opens with a direct summons to the soul not to sleep through praise, then moves into a brief portrayal of the righteous as people who remember the Lord continually, accept his chastening without resentment, watch for his salvation, and actively cleanse their households from injustice. The psalm gives unusual weight to interior vigilance: wakefulness, confession, fasting, and humble self-correction all belong to righteous life. Against that stands the sinner, who stumbles, curses his own life, adds sin to sin, and falls into a destruction that will not rise. The final verse gathers the contrast into its eschatological form: sinners receive an everlasting portion of ruin, but those who fear the Lord rise to eternal life in the Lord's light. The result is a sapiential meditation on praise, discipline, repentance, household holiness, and the final divergence between righteous endurance and sinful collapse.
