Theme

The hypocritical flatterer is exposed and cut off from the holy.

Translation & textual notes

A severe denunciation of the corrupt insider among the holy drives this chapter. The poem does not target an external enemy so much as a sanctimonious predator: a man excessive in speech, harsh in judgment, sexually unrestrained, commercially false, and skilled at insinuating himself into households under a mask of innocence. The middle of the chapter therefore shifts from exposure to imprecation, asking God to uncover the deeds of such people, disgrace their schemes, and cut them off from the righteous. The final verses distinguish the hypocrite from those who fear the Lord in innocence and trust him for deliverance. As a whole, the psalm presents hypocrisy not as a minor inconsistency but as a destructive social force that profanes the holy community and provokes the God of Israel.

Why do you, profane one, sit in the council of the holy while your heart stands far from the Lord, provoking the God of Israel by acts of lawlessness?

Accusationἵνα
The psalm begins with direct rebuke: the scandal is not mere sin, but profane presence among the holy while inwardly estranged from God.
