The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 18ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΙΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Human brevity should produce repentance, gracious speech, and restrained desire.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 18 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. It begins with the Lord's incomparability and humanity's brevity, then explains divine patience as the fitting answer to mortal frailty and ruin. From there it turns toward merciful correction, gracious speech, vows, prayer, remembrance of reversal, and disciplined desire, so that self-examination and self-restraint stand under the larger theme of God's measured compassion. The final sayings commend receptivity to wisdom and warn against appetites that make a person ridiculous before enemies. Greek versification is followed here; the surviving sequence omits verse 3 in the common English numbering.
